You Should Know Aquaponics Like Cooking!

Getting enough to eat will become one of the big political questions in the times to come, around the planet, as food sourced abroad, even in the European Union, becomes unaffordably costly, because of food shortages everywhere, and even worse financial crises caused by ‘globalization’.

Food prices are escalating and shortly the majority will find it impossible to finance a decent diet. Ensuring adequate food supplies is being eroded rapidly, even in advanced economies such as the U.S. and the U.K., because they import much of their food from far away.

Everyone living in concrete-paved cities worldwide should be taught skills for very effective, cheaper modern food growing methods that do not involve access to any fields, so they can start rooftop aquaponics.

Nobody should have to self-identify as a gardener, farmer or have a mythical green thumb. Whether or not one tries to grow some food, or start a commercial urban aquaponic farm, everyone should be aware of how grow some food using super-fertile technology such as aquaponics and hydroponics, which need only a bit of space and water to grow up to 40% more food for the space used, than old-fashioned soil food production methods.

Aquaponics in my view is the cornerstone of true food wealth. Understanding how to produce food with aquaponics should be as taken for granted as knowing how to cook it. I think that food growing is personal and need not be a massive ranch operation. You should be able to do it in your old swimming pool or on the flat roof of your building.

I also believe in the ancient Chinese proverb credited to Lao Tzu -“give a man a fish, feed him for a

day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime”.

However, until very recently, access to information telling you how to set up your own aquaponics system and grow some food was hard to find. It was also really difficult to judge which system, if any, to use and how much it would all cost. There is no point in trying to grow some food if you have to bankrupt yourself first building the aquaponics system. If you go too cheap, there is no point putting in the fish and vegetables into their respective tanks and grow beds if they are so cheaply built they start to leak badly a week later!

On the other hand, since you can grow 40% more food than any other known farming method using aquaponics, on only 10% of the water and land needed by conventional agriculture, it is easily possible to feed a family of four most of its fish, vegetables and fruit from a medium-sized backyard system. These can be built with simple materials and tools obtainable from your local hardware store, and need not be pricey. Of course, if you look online, there are also some very expensive kits available. But since you can do it all yourself, you can control how much you are likely to spend on constructing your own backyard aquaponic system. This may seem a bit difficult, but help is at hand!

There is now a website that attempts to cover all the angles on aquaponics, large and small, and how to grow some food. It also has links to working aquaponic farms, downloads of papers on aquaponics by some of the most respected authorities in the business, and photos of real working systems for you to study. There is even a Siamese fighting fish called Diplo who makes occasional diary entries about his life in an aquaponic office tabletop system.

It’s called ‘Floating Worlds Aquaponics’ and most of the info on it is free!
